Communication Arts Photo Annual 2010

I was pretty happy to find out that I've been included in the Communication Arts Photo Annual again for 2010.  The chosen image came from a shoot that was done for Field & Stream magazine in Kamiah, Idaho.  We were there to photograph Robert Millage, the first hunter to legally kill a wolf in Idaho since the animals were taken off the endangered species list.  I've photographed a few hunting stories for Field & Stream in the past couple of years and I really enjoy them.  You often find yourself in beautiful places for stories like these, and the setting of Kamiah, in the Clearwater River valley was no exception.

The subjects themselves can also be really interesting and aesthetically hunting gear and fireamarms just make great pictures.  Robert had grown up hunting and fishing his whole life in the area and had a very intelligent philosphy on hunting and especially predator hunting which can be quite controversial.  He had left Idaho for a number of years to travel and work around the country and even worked at Amazon.com in Seattle when they started during the whole dotcom boom of the late 90's.  We spent a whole day driving around the outlying areas in his 4X4 and stopping occasionally when we'd find something that we liked and then set up the gear and shoot a bit.

When we were finished after dark we headed back to his house to get our last couple of shots, a portrait of Robert on seamless and a shot of the wolf skull.

Robert's two sons were home, and were really curious about what we were doing in the living room.  It was dinner time, and they were eating in the kitchen and being very well behaved staying out of our way, but after we'd finished the "official" portraits and had started to pack up the background and the gear, they came in to the livingroom with some toys and wanted to get a closer look at all the photo gear.   All of a sudden everything just came together and we had this amazing picture of Robert and his two sons.  This is the image that was chosen for the CA Annual.

And just because it's always interesting to see what gets chosen from an edit to run in the magazine - here's what the magazine ended up running from the shoot.
